Douglas Laing properly go for it with their Old and Rare Platinum range, picking only the most ridiculously desirable whiskies to join the impressive selection. Speaking of ridiculously desirable, how does a 30-year-old Port Ellen sound? Distilled in April 1982, a year before the distillery closed down, it matured for 30 quiet years until it was bottled in November 2012, with an outturn of just 139 bottles.
The whisky opens fresh and surprisingly sweet on the nose carrying a fruity – peaty- style plus toffee. Now it’s Islay character becomes even more apparent on the palate with ashes and bandages, yet still sweetly spiced. The finish is long, briny and lightly smoked with a lingering camphor quality.
